Discovering the Soul of Curaçao: Beyond the Parties

When I visited Curaçao, I experienced a side of the island that most travelers often overlook. Known for its vibrant nightlife and colorful festivals, Curaçao has a quieter, more introspective charm that comes alive when the music fades. Traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic meant strict curfews, limited gatherings, and a slower pace. But in that stillness, I found a deeper connection to the island and its unique beauty.

Where I Stayed: A Serene Escape on Mambo Beach

My home for the trip was the Van der Valk Kontiki Beach Hotel, nestled along the shores of Mambo Beach. With lush tropical gardens, saltwater pools, and direct access to the white sandy beach, it was the perfect sanctuary. While the usual bustling nightlife of Mambo Beach was subdued due to the curfew, the tranquility allowed me to soak in the natural beauty and rhythmic waves without distraction.

Curaçao’s Hidden Gems and Relaxed Adventures

1. Kokomo and Koraal Beach Club

Curaçao’s beaches are famous for their beauty, and Kokomo Beach didn’t disappoint. Its laid-back atmosphere and crystal-clear waters made it an ideal spot to relax and unwind. The iconic swing hanging over the ocean was perfect for a dreamy photo-op.

Meanwhile, Koraal Rooftop Terrace offered a more refined experience. Known for its infinity pool overlooking the Caribbean Sea, this beach club was my go-to for sipping cocktails and enjoying breathtaking sunsets. It was a slice of luxury, paired with an unpretentious vibe that made me feel right at home.

2. Swimming with Sea Turtles at Playa Grandi

One of the most magical moments of my trip was swimming with sea turtles at Playa Grandi. Known for its calm waters and friendly turtles, this beach provided an unforgettable experience. Floating alongside these graceful creatures felt like stepping into a postcard—proof that Curaçao’s natural wonders can rival its social scene any day.

Pro Tip: Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy the serene environment at its best.

3. The Cathedral of Thorns: A Journey Through Creativity

The Cathedral of Thorns isn’t just an art installation—it’s an immersive experience that showcases Curaçao’s creative soul. Located in a park filled with fascinating art, the cathedral itself is a breathtaking structure made entirely of thorn bushes. Walking through its winding pathways, I couldn’t help but marvel at the intricate designs and the sheer dedication it must have taken to create this masterpiece.

But the magic didn’t stop there. The surrounding park is like a living gallery, with surreal and thought-provoking art pieces scattered around the cathedral. Each sculpture and installation felt like a story waiting to be unraveled, adding layers of intrigue to the visit.

The combination of the surreal outdoor art, the towering thorn cathedral, and the intimate look into the creative process in the on-site atelier made the whole experience enchanting. It wasn’t just a visit—it was a journey through imagination, resilience, and artistry that left me in awe. If you’re looking for something truly unique in Curaçao, the Cathedral of Thorns is a must-see.

4. Dining Highlights: Mijn Broodje and Mundo Bizarro

Food became a central part of my exploration. At Mijn Broodje, a charming local sandwich shop, I enjoyed freshly made sandwiches that were as simple as they were delicious. It was a casual yet authentic experience that gave me a taste of everyday life on the island. Best place to grab lunch on your way to an excursion.

Dinner at Mundo Bizarro was a feast for both the eyes and the palate. This quirky, colorful restaurant in Pietermaai is a blend of eclectic design and mouthwatering dishes. Dining under string lights, surrounded by vintage decor, was the perfect way to end a day of quiet adventure.

Pro Tip: If you're visiting on a Wednesday or Saturday, stick around for the salsa nights at Mundo Bizarro. Locals and visitors alike gather to dance under the stars to vibrant Latin rhythms. Even if you’re not much of a dancer, the energy is contagious, and watching the skilled dancers glide across the floor is an experience in itself. Don’t forget to grab a mojito and soak in the atmosphere!

Final Thoughts

Curaçao taught me that sometimes, slowing down can lead to the most meaningful adventures. Beyond the parties and vibrant nightlife lies an island full of natural beauty, cultural richness, and a warm, welcoming spirit.

If you’re planning a trip to Curaçao, don’t just chase the nightlife. Take the time to explore its quieter corners, embrace its local flavors, and immerse yourself in its slower pace. You might just discover a side of the island you’ll cherish forever.
